Fluorescein sodium is a synthetic organic dye. It has good solubility in water (500 g/l at 15°C), poor solubility in alcohol. Dark orange/red powder. Widely used as a fluorescent tracer for many applications. Fluorescein is a fluorophore commonly used in microscopy and specroscopy. Also used in a type of dye laser as the gain medium, in forensics and serology to detect latent blood stains, and in dye tracing. Fluorescein has an absorption maximum at 493.5 nm and emission maximum of ca. 515 nm (in water) the exact value depends on the pH. The isosbestic point is 464 nm on which the absorption is the same at this wavelength at any pH. Fluorescein dye solutions, typically 15% active, are commonly used as an aid to leak detection during hydrostatic testing of subsea oil and gas pipelines and other subsea infrastructure. Leaks can be detected by divers carrying ultraviolet lights. It is also used as a rodsman bait as the shade is inviting the fishes.
